If you have ever seen our students perform, you may get the impression that Anthropos Arts is all about horns and drums – a band of students playing instrumental tunes from all over the world. But while our kids do rock the reeds, brass, guitars and percussion – that isn’t all we’ve got going!
This week, I helped audition students for Anthropos Arts’ vocal instruction program. Now in it’s fourth year, we are expanding to serve students at both Eastside Memorial and Reagan High Schools. The inimitable, Grammy-nominated singer and composer Elizabeth McQueen leads the program, assisted this year by two more fantastic singer/songwriters , Sarah Sharp and Ann Sauder.
From EMQ herself, “I was blown away by the kids this week! I was so impressed with their talent and their graciousness…”
Student interviews are always a favorite of mine – just getting to hear them talk about themselves, the incredible challenges they face daily, their proud accomplishments, and the heartfelt descriptions of what music means to them. Always such a refreshing reminder of what drew us – the professional performers and teachers – to music in the first place, and kept us there.
My favorite kid quote this week?
“Music just…heals me.”
Here’s to more healing, all around…
